Dorm Grooming & Hygiene Questions for Guys (Answered)

I’ve had more than a few guys—from my brothers to college freshmen at Maryland—ask me what they actually need when it comes to staying clean and sharp in a dorm. Most of them had no idea what to bring, and almost everyone forgets something critical. So here’s a no-fluff, real answers kind of guide to grooming essentials for guys.

1. Do I really need to bring a razor or shaving gear?
Yes. Even if you’re not shaving every day, you’ll want a solid razor like the Gillette Fusion5 and a good shaving gel like Nivea Sensitive. A random dorm bathroom is not the place to experiment with disposable razors.

2. What’s the one thing every guy forgets?
Clippers. I cannot stress this enough. Get yourself a quality set like the Philips Norelco Multigroom. You’ll save time and money on trims, and you won’t be that guy begging for scissors in week three.

3. How do I not smell like a gym bag by week two?
Body wash matters. Try Every Man Jack – Cedarwood. It smells amazing and works. Pair that with Old Spice deodorant and a solid laundry routine.

4. Do I really need aftershave or cologne?
Not if you don’t use them. But if you like smelling good and feeling fresh, pack something subtle—not overpowering. Think Nautica Voyage or a balm-based aftershave to prevent irritation.

5. What’s a grooming kit? Do I need one?
Yes. A basic set like Tweezerman Men’s Grooming Kit has clippers, tweezers, and scissors—stuff you don’t realize you need until your first hangnail or splinter.

These aren’t extras. These are the basics for not looking like you rolled out of bed all semester. Don’t overdo it. Just get the stuff that works. If I missed something, hit me up in the comments or DM. I’m here to keep the dorm life clean and simple.
