Dorm Haul: What I Bought vs. What I Actually Used

Let’s talk about dorm shopping regrets.
Look, I get it. Move-in day is exciting. You’re starting a whole new chapter, and suddenly every pastel-colored bin and gold-accented desk lamp looks like a *need*, not a want. But DO NOT go full Pinterest mode for your dorm haul. I repeat—don’t do it.
I fell into the trap. I bought the matching throw pillows, the aesthetic acrylic organizers, a tiny coffee machine that looked amazing in theory, and even a ring light because… who doesn’t want good lighting while journaling in their dorm?
But here’s the truth: all that cute stuff? It’s mainly driven by the excitement of novelty rather than actual necessity. Guess how much of that I actually used? Hardly any.
Let’s break it down.

✅ Daily MVPs:
1. Surge Protector – You get like two outlets in your dorm. Two. A surge protector is the real hero.
2. Clip-On Lamp – Perfect for late-night study sessions without waking your roommate.
3. Cozy Bedding – You’ll sleep better. Period.
4. Laundry Backpack – Hauling your clothes to the basement laundry room? Not the vibe with a hard plastic bin.

❌ Dust Collectors
1. Fancy Decorative Pillows – They looked cute… until they started living on the floor full-time.
2. Mini Waffle Maker– Used it twice. Cleaned it never. Regret level: high.
3. LED Signs and Wall Decals – Kept falling off. Kept making me mad.
Here’s the real talk: you don’t have space for extras. Your dorm isn’t a magazine shoot it’s your crash pad, study zone, and hangout spot. Function has to come before form.
Does that mean you can’t make it cute? Of course not! But make it cute *after* you’ve nailed the basics. Move in, live in it for a week, then see what you’re really missing.
Because at the end of the day, storage space is limited, and your energy is better spent building routines, not rearranging throw pillows.
