What is the dorm hacker..and why should you care?

 

Dorm Hacker started because I saw how tough dorm life can be—and how a few smart changes can make a big difference.

It really began with one of my five brothers. He’s super smart, studying engineering, but had no clue about tools or setting up a living space. At the time, I had just started working at a hardware store and earned my Path to Pro certification, so I helped him get his apartment set up. I showed him the tools he actually needed, gave him tips on basic repairs, and helped him get organized.Later, I helped him pick out decorations and stuff for his kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom things that were both good-looking and built to last.

Not long after, another one of my brothers moved into a dorm at UMD. It was his first time living on his own, so I helped him too showing him the best way to set things up so it felt clean, functional, and comfortable for anyone who visited.After that, word started to spread. People knew I worked in hardware and had my certifications. I never made it a job, but I kept helping my brothers and their friends. I’d send them links, recommend tools, and answer random questions over text or social media.

Now I work full-time as a hardware specialist, managing everything from houseware to construction materials. I talk to all kinds of people every day, including students who are just trying to figure out what to buy or how to fix something. A lot of the stuff online is either sponsored, misleading, or just not made with students in mind. That’s why I started The Dorm Hacker is made to give real, honest advice to people who want their dorm to look good, feel organized, and actually work for them.
